Entheism 101

New to Entheism? Discover the basics tenets of Entheism.

What is Entheism?

Entheism is the belief that the Divine exists within all things and can be directly experienced. It recognizes that spiritual awakening can come through many paths, including the use of sacred sacraments like psilocybin mushrooms.

At PRISMA, Entheism is not a rigid doctrine but an open invitation to explore spirituality in a way that aligns with your own beliefs. Whether you call it God, the Universe, the Higher Self, or the Holy Spirit, entheogens serve as a bridge to deepen your connection.

A Brief History of Entheism

The term Entheogen was coined in 1979 by a group of enthobotanist and scholars of mythology. The term is derived from two words of Ancient Greek ἔνθεος (éntheos) and γενέσθαι (genésthai).

The adjective entheos translates to English as "full of the god, inspired, possessed.” Genesthai means "to come into being". Thus, an entheogen is a drug that causes one to become inspired or to experience feelings of inspiration, often in a religious or spiritual manner.

Ancient Mesoamerican civilizations revered psilocybin mushrooms as a means of connecting with the divine, while indigenous traditions across Africa, Europe, and Asia have long recognized the spiritual potential of plant medicines. Today, Entheism continues to evolve as a living practice that blends ancient wisdom with modern understanding.

Why Entheogens?

Entheogens have been used in sacred ceremonies for centuries to foster deep introspection, healing, and spiritual insight. Unlike recreational use, sacramental use is intentional and guided within a ceremonial space.

At PRISMA, psilocybin mushrooms are honored as tools for transformation, allowing participants to break through barriers, dissolve egoic limitations, and experience profound unity with themselves and the world around them. These experiences are personal and deeply meaningful, offering clarity, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Sacred Plants and Their Role in Spiritual Exploration

Psilocybin mushrooms are among the most well-known entheogens, but they are not the only ones. Indigenous cultures have long used plant sacraments such as ayahuasca, peyote, San Pedro, and iboga to access expanded states of consciousness.

Each plant carries its own spirit, personality, wisdom, and provides different insights and teachings. At PRISMA, psilocybin is the primary sacrament, chosen for its ability to guide deep self-inquiry, emotional healing, and spiritual awakening. Mushrooms are referred to as "teacher or "Teacher," although not seen as a deity, but part of Spirit / Universe—the collective of all things that are Spirit, and it's unique personality that expresses itself. Just like you are a unique expression of Spirit, so is the Teacher.

Entheogens, Ceremony, and Spiritual Practice

Ceremony is the container that holds the entheogenic experience, transforming it from a psychedelic journey into a sacred rite. Through ritual, intention, and guidance, psilocybin becomes more than just a substance—it becomes a teacher. In PRISMA ceremonies, entheogens are used with deep respect, following time-honored practices that ensure a safe and intentional space. By working with these sacraments in a structured way, participants can access wisdom beyond the mind, connecting with something greater than themselves.

Legal Protections Under RFRA

PRISMA’s use of entheogens is protected under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which allows for the sacramental use of sacred plants in religious settings. Unlike recreational use, which is often unstructured and without spiritual intention, PRISMA’s ceremonies follow a lineage of sacred practice, ensuring that entheogens are used with reverence and care. This protection allows participants to engage in their spiritual journey without legal risk, honoring the right to seek divine connection through plant medicines.

Entheism and Omnism: A Path for All Beliefs

PRISMA embraces Omnism, the belief that wisdom can be found in all spiritual paths. There is no one way to experience the Divine, and no single truth that applies to all. Entheism complements this perspective by offering a direct experience of the sacred, free from dogma or rigid belief systems. In ceremony, many come to experience their understanding of "Holy Spirit," "Universe," "God," or their "Higher Self." Regardless of your experience, framing, interpretive language, or perspective, it is all welcome as you connect within.

Whether you come from a religious background or consider yourself spiritual but not religious, entheogens can serve as a gateway to deeper self-awareness and connection with the universe in a way that aligns with your personal beliefs.
